A new book is coming out that claims to reveal the sordid history of the Wayne family. There are photos of young Martha, trackmarks in her arms, performing various sexual acts with Thomas Wayne, his "creepy butler" Alfred, and various other decadent millionaires. Supposedly, after Thomas and Martha were gunned down in an alley, Martha's family insisted that Thomas set the whole thing up and faked his own death. And it seems the Waynes might have been involved in a secret society called the Black Glove.
Now Bruce Wayne is obsessed with the Black Glove, an apparent brilliant criminal mastermind out to destroy Batman. Bruce's new girlfriend, Jezebel Jet, is convinced that Bruce has had a mental breakdown, and that he is the Black Glove. Or maybe she's the Black Glove? Or maybe Alfred?
Then Dr. Hurt, who conducted intense sensory deprivation experiments with Batman years ago, and the Club of Villain break into the Batcave. They incapacitate Batman and beat up Alfred.
Now Bruce Wayne, strung out on heroin and crystal meth, is roaming the streets of Gotham, trying to figure out who he is, while Dick Grayson is an incoherent lunatic locked up in Arkham Asylum.
I'm talking about the Batman R.I.P. storyline from the monthly Batman comic book series, by the way. Written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Tony Daniels. Part 3 of 6 recently came out.
Yeah, the ads have the ol' checklist of titles that makes it look like a big dumb crossover event, but so far the whole story is in Batman. I suspect the Robin and Nightwing "tie-in" issues won't have much to do with what Grant's doing.
i have to admit that dc puts out better plot lines than marvel anyday, probably because their superheroes are paragons, and thus the fall from grace is much greater than ever. i still love "identity crisis". thanks for the heads up on batman RIP.
oh and on an off topic, i just heard of the Mortal Combat vs DC Universe vid game out this fall. i'll leave that bit of a tidbit of info to set in
