The best version of the League? The best super-hero team? Or the best thing, period? It's hard to say, and depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

So on another thread Steve brought up the "Greek Pantheon" era of the JLA and we were trying to remember what character stood for what Greek god. I finally went ahead and looked it up on Wikipedia, and realized we had completely forgotten Oracle, who joined the JLA as a full member at this time. Who was clearly Athena. So the point remains, who was the Martian Manhunter? You know, the shapechanging-telepathic-vulnerable to fire archetype?

According to Wikipedia, the 12 Olympians are: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Hestia, Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Hephaestus, and Hermes. We know from our classical continuity that Hestia gave up her seat for Dionysus. I notice that Hades is not listed, presumably because these are Olympians, which means they live on Mount Olympus, and Hades is way down in the underworld. But we know we want him. So I assume he replaces Demeter, on the grounds that she's boring. Which gives us:

Zeus - Superman
Hera - Wonder Woman
Poseidon - Aquaman
Hades - Batman
Dionysus - Plastic Man
Aphrodite - Barda
Apollo - Green Lantern
Ares - Orion
Artemis - Huntress
Athena - Oracle
Hephaestus - Steel
Hermes - Flash

Hmmmm. So apparently the Martian Manhunter is Hestia, goddess of the home and hearth. Come to think of it, during this era the MM usually stayed at the Watchtower and coordinated things.
