guys, you're missing the important corrolary of every rpg out there... you've spent the money on the game, you're allowed to house rule it as much as you want.

the rules are the to give you guidelines on how to play, but they're always there to be tweaked to your table's preferences. the story matters most of all, not bickering over a rule. on top of that, whatever rule you decide, your players are actually spending yy's, not hoarding them like greeedy gnomes. i know ian likes it when players use yy's like crazy.

is spending the one yy as a failure negate option such a big deal? probably not... if it's a loophole, then more power to the player who found the imagination to use it.

good gaming guys

Actually, all the QAGS GMs I've played with (And the only folks I've never played with are Ruckus and M. Kuszek--I gotta remedy that at BASHcon and Gencon next year) approach the game in distinctly different ways. And yet they're all still cleary QAGS.

That's the beauty of the system.

my thoughts exactly, ian. qags is the play-dough of rpgs. some people segregate their colors perfectly, other have five cannisters of gray. whatever floats your boat.

Are you ready for this?

I looked over the rules in both QAGS and M-Force over the weekend. Looking at them, it seems to me that the original intent was to push characters into Preemptive Yum Yum Usage (PYYU) rather than Reactive Yum Yum Usage (RYYU). That makes sense, especially if you want to pursue cooperative story telling.

What I was doing basically did nothing more than raise the target number by 3 on all rolls. I'll probably can that in the new con season. (Sorry, MTK.)

I am still going to keep the re-roll cost at 1YY though.

My experience is that PYYU occurs more in ongoing campaigns or semi-regular QAGS games rather than congames. At congames, we have some players that have never used the system before so they are just learning how to use Yum-yums in the system. A player understands rerolling a dice or paying for an automatic success much easier than using yum yums to bend reality.

The use for Yum-Yums that I always forget about is spending a Yum Yum to prevent a weakness from taking effect. I will have to incorporate that into my con games for the next season.

I'm not sure where the 1 YY for reroll got started although I know I'm guilty of that at congames too.

If I may play Grayface's Advocate for a moment... It could be argued that when running a demo of a game, one should use the rules as written, since you are supposedly demonstrating the rules. In your own games, certainly bend and break rules as you desire, but for Hex-run con games, it might be best to stick to the published rules.

That said, I'm probably going to end up breaking the rules anyway. I mean, I'm no zealot.
