A few people who were teenagers in the 1970s still remember Groovin’ Zed & The Roller Kings. They might not recognize the band’s name, but they’ll probably recall hearing the group’s semi-hit “Peyote.” The 23 minute song got some airplay on college stations, and the band toured around the U.S. in their brightly painted “love bus.” The few radio stations in America with live DJs still occasionally play “Peyote,” usually late at night when the DJ has to take a dump.
Others might know about the mysterious disappearance of the entire band, mainly because the story was told on an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries” and periodically gets brought up on various VH-1 specials. In 1976, the “love bus” was found abandoned in the Arizona desert. The band’s clothes and large supply of recreational drugs were still on the bus, which had no apparent mechanical problems and nearly a full tank of gas. Only the band members, their instruments, and their faithful dog Reefer were missing. None of them have ever been seen on Earth again.
What most people don’t know is that an alien talent scout abducted Groovin’ Zed and all four of the Roller Kings and whisked them away to an alien world billions of light years away to compete in an intergalactic battle of the bands. The Roller Kings lost, of course, but they landed a recording contract in the process. Now Groovin’ Zed and the Roller Kings make their way around the galaxy in the Love Ship, playing gigs, righting wrongs, and hoping to someday find a planet that grows killer space weed.
