Rethinking Ritual Magic, Part III

Features - Gaming Articles

In the last set of design notes for the ritual magic system I’m working on, I tried putting together some sample spells to see if the rules actually worked the way I hoped they would. Not surprisingly, I found several problem areas, so I came up with variations or new ideas to make the system better model the type of magic I want to see in my games. My next step was to put the rough system outline and the notes from the last article together and flesh them out into something more closely resembling a final draft of the rules set. Along the way, of course, I found ways to streamline things a bit, discovered that more changes needed to be made, and introduced a new concept or two to make the system accomplish my design goals. The revised draft is available in the downloads section of the Hex site.

A Six Pack of Stagger Lee

Features - Gaming Articles

This article originally appeared in an old incarnation of The Death Cookie. Since Stag's hat is one of the items described in American Artifacts, this seemed like a good time to reprint it.

If you're a music fan (especially a blues fan), there's a good chance you've heard at least a song or two about a man named Stagger Lee, or maybe Stag O'Lee, Stacker Lee, Stack-A-Lee, or any of the many names Stag's been known to go by. Songs about Stagger Lee have been recorded by over 200 different artists, including Mississippi John Hurt, Lloyd Price, The Grateful Dead, and Nick Cave. The details vary from song to song, but the basic story goes something like this:

The Rules: Robin Hood

In the past month, I've had Robin Hood on the brain. I've been toying with the idea of doing some sort of Robin Hood supplement for QAGS for several months now, so when I found a copy of J.C. Holt's book, Robin Hood, which attempts to find the historical Robin by tracing the character's literary history, I bought a copy. I've also been watching the second season of the recent BBC Robin Hood series starring Jonas Armstrong, which is lots of fun despite (and occasionally because of) it's quirks. Last but not least, I went to see a Ridley Scott movie starring Russell Crowe that is called Robin Hood but doesn't actually seem to be about Robin Hood. Don't get me wrong: I appreciate the fact that characters like Robin Hood change over time, but certain core aspects of the character need to remain. Otherwise, the character ceases to be a character in any meaningful way. As a public service to Ridley Scott, here are The Rules of a Robin Hood story.

The Rules: Sword & Sorcery

Lately, several members of the Hex staff have been discovering or re-discovering classic pulp sci-fi and fantasy. I picked up a big ass book of Conan stories a few months ago and have been slowly making my way through it; a few of the others have read or re-read the John Carter of Mars books (which are in also in my reading pile) in the past year; and all of us have been fans of the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser books for quite some time. Not surprisingly, the subject of Sword & Sorcery fantasy came up at Hexcon South, the staff retreat and flood preparedness workshop held just outside of Nashville during the first weekend of May.

I've tried running S&S at a couple of cons now, and there is just one tweak I've made to the character creation.

When we get to skills, I give the players 8 pts. to spread in as many skills as they want, but specify that 2 pts. must be in a weapons skill or skills.

I just found it easier on me that way.

DC Classic: How To Drive Your Players Wild and Make Them Beg for More

The title of this article is inspired by a book I once read. I know what you're thinking--reading is for pussies. Well, most of the time I would agree. But I ordered this book from the back of Jugs magazine, so it's acceptable. Other than Jugs and related periodicals, the only thing a REAL MAN reads is Batman. Batman is a manly He-Man, just like me--Ryan Trimble. And we both look great in tights, baby!
