WB101 Part 6: Son of The Big Picture

Columns - World Building 101

I said back in January that with the holidays over and done with, I’d get back to writing this column every month. Obviously, that didn’t work out quite like I’d planned. Never fear, though: In order to avoid such broken promises in the future, I will heretofore refrain from suggesting that there is any regular schedule for this column. Not an ambitious solution to the problem, but a solution nonetheless.

WB101 Part 5: The Big Picture

Columns - World Building 101

Welcome back to World Building 101. It’s been a while, but now that the holiday season is behind us, I’m going to try to get back to a more-or-less regular monthly schedule (at least until convention season starts). In the last exciting episode, I created a map of the world and started thinking about where the different cultures I’d already established would be found. This time around, I’m going to take a step back and look at some of the “big picture” concepts that need to be worked out.

At the end of last month’s exciting episode, I mentioned that I’d started dividing my ideas up into five general culture groups. Before I start working on the broader aspects of the world, let’s take a look at the specific groups that I know will inhabit it.

WB101 Part 2: Spiral Notebooks and You

Columns - World Building 101

Whenever I start working on a new project, be it a redesign of the Hex web page or a new game book, I start with a spiral notebook. When the big box stores have their back to school sales every year, I buy a big stack of them for 17 cents or so each. While a lot of people may prefer computers for this sort of thing, I prefer the spiral notebook because it’s easy to use and extremely portable. I keep one in my car at all times, plus one in my gaming bag and one beside the bed (for those ideas that hit me as I’m drifting off to sleep).
