World Building 101

WB101 Part 5: The Big Picture

E-mail Print PDF

Welcome back to World Building 101. It’s been a while, but now that the holiday season is behind us, I’m going to try to get back to a more-or-less regular monthly schedule (at least until convention season starts). In the last exciting episode, I created a map of the world and started thinking about where the different cultures I’d already established would be found. This time around, I’m going to take a step back and look at some of the “big picture” concepts that need to be worked out.

WB101 Part 4: Map Time

E-mail Print PDF

Last month, I started thinking about the major cultural groups in the world and how they interact with one another. As a side-effect of this process, I also started to get a general idea of what the world looks like. The Empire stretches to a major coastline, which is probably far away from the imperial capital (which is probably in the middle of the main continent of the game world). There are at least three major island nations off this coast, one of them very mountainous. Of course, so far I only know about the Empire and the people that it hasn’t taken control of yet. WB101 Part 2: Spiral Notebooks and You

E-mail Print PDF

Whenever I start working on a new project, be it a redesign of the Hex web page or a new game book, I start with a spiral notebook. When the big box stores have their back to school sales every year, I buy a big stack of them for 17 cents or so each. While a lot of people may prefer computers for this sort of thing, I prefer the spiral notebook because it’s easy to use and extremely portable. I keep one in my car at all times, plus one in my gaming bag and one beside the bed (for those ideas that hit me as I’m drifting off to sleep).

WB101 Part 1: When Ideas Attack!

E-mail Print PDF

A while ago, I started building a fantasy world. I didn’t mean to do it, it just kind of happened. I ran across an interesting fact and thought, “that would be neat to use in a game.” If this has ever happened to you, you know that usually these kinds of ideas evaporate into the ether. At most, these random thoughts find their way into a pre-existing campaign or convention game.
